Offstein was founded in 1883 and is one of the company's oldest factories. During the campaign, 16,000 tonnes of beets are processed per day. Offstein is thereby one of Südzucker's key factories.

The factory operates twenty-four hours per day during the campaign, which lasts from the end of September to the end of December. From 1,600 to 1,800 tonnes of sugar are produced daily. One-third of the beet syrup, equivalent to about 600 to 800 additional tonnes of white sugar, is stored in two 50,000 cubic-meter tanks instead of being immediately processed. The contents of this tank are used to produce about 80,000 tonnes of white sugar during the beet syrup campaign in May and June of the following year. The silos can hold 100,000 tonnes of sugar. About 130,000 tonnes of sugar are converted to liquid sugar, fructose, caramel syrups and Isomalt (Palatinit) in Offstein over the course of one year.

During the campaign, about 430 people are employed at the plant. The number drops to 400 (thereof about 220 for the sugar converting operations) during the remainder of the year. Most are specialists qualified to handle the sugar extraction and converting equipment, as well as repair and maintain the sophisticated technical systems. For many years, apprentices have been successfully trained as industrial mechanics, power plant technicians and industrial accountants at the plant. About ten percent of the total workforce consists of apprentices. Südzucker AG's central research department (ZAFES), which has about 130 employees, is also located at the Offstein site.

About 2,800 farmers plant sugar beets on an area of about 26,000 hectares for the factory. The area covers Ried in Hessen, Odenwald, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Taunus and Wetterau. Beet cultivation and payment are regulated by a contract. In areas such as beet growing and the associated logistics, among others, Südzucker and farmers work in partnership in order to ensure that the quality of the raw materials supplied to the factories; i.e., beets, is the best possible, and that they arrive at the right time.
