Factory and production performance
Offstein was founded in 1883 and is one of the company's oldest factories. Several thousand tonnes of beets are delivered and converted to syrup and sugar per day. Offstein is thereby one of Südzucker's key factories. The plant operates twenty-four hours per day during the beet campaign between September and January. Some of the syrup produced daily is stored and converted to white sugar in a separate beet syrup campaign in May and June of the following year. The total sugar storage capacity of the factory's silos is more than 90,000 tonnes. The secondary processing operations at the Offstein factory convert some of the sugar to sugar syrup, fructose, caramel syrups and isomalt year-round.
About 300 people work in the factory. Most workers are specialists qualified to handle the sugar extraction and converting equipment, as well as repair and maintain the sophisticated technical systems. For many years, apprentices have been successfully trained as industrial mechanics, power plant technicians and industrial accountants at the plant. About ten percent of the total workforce consists of apprentices.
Furthermore, Südzucker AG's central research department (ZAFES) and the central engineering department, which have about 170 employees, are also located at the Offstein site. BENEO GmbH and BENEO-Palatinit GmbH, both Südzucker AG companies, employ about 130 people and produce functional carbohydrates such as isomalt, Palatinose™ and galenIQ™ from pure beet sugar for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries.
Partnership with farmers
Südzucker Group relies on its close partnership with the agricultural industry. About 1,900 farmers plant sugar beets for the factory. The area covers Ried in Hessen, Odenwald, Pfalz, Rheinhessen, Taunus and Wetterau. Beet cultivation and payment are regulated by a contract. In areas such as beet growing and the associated logistics, among others, Südzucker and farmers work in partnership in order to ensure that the quality of the raw materials supplied to the factories; i.e., beets, is the best possible, and that they arrive at the right time.
Varieties of sugar produced at the Offstein factory
Sugar converting is a particularly important part of this plant's operations. A large part of the sugar produced is used as an input material by the location's converting operations, which make sugar syrup, fructose, caramel syrups, the sugar substitute isomalt and Palatinose™ sugar. Animal feed, molasses and carbolic lime, sold as "Carbokalk", are valuable byproducts also produced at the Offstein factory.
