German sugar factories

Rain

The Rain factory was built in 1957 and processes 12,000 tonnes of beets per day during the campaign. The factory operates around the clock during the beet campaign from September to the end of December and 1,800 tonnes of sugar are produced daily. In other words, on average, the annual requirements of one German citizen are met every two seconds. The plant's production output is thereby able to satisfy the needs of about five million consumers. The silos can hold 90,000 tonnes of sugar.
Rain's wide range of sugar products
Some of the sugar produced is stored loose in dry bulk tankers and delivered in 50 and 25 kg bags. The following products are also manufactured at the Rain facility:
Liquid sugar  about 70,000 tonnes per year
Household sugar in 1-kg packages  about 40,000 tonnes per year
Jam sugar  about 10,000 tonnes per year
Portion packs
(coffeehouse cubes and packets)
about 3,000 tonnes per year
By-products
Animal feed  about 60,000 tonnes per year
Molasses  about 15,000 tonnes per year
Carbokalk  about 40,000 tonnes per year

In-house lab to analyze soil samples
In addition to the systems for manufacturing sugar, the factory has a laboratory in which soil samples or plant diseases are analyzed, depending on the time of year. Every year, lab technicians analyze about 50,000 soil samples for the purpose of making fertilizer recommendations and carry out around 4,000 investigations into plant diseases.
Employees
During the campaign, about 250 people are employed at the plant. The number drops to 220 the rest of the time. Most are specialists qualified to handle the sugar extraction equipment, as well as repair and maintain the sophisticated technical systems.
Partnership with farmers
Sugar beets are planted for the factory on an area of 16,000 hectares by 3,100 farmers. The area covered includes Swabia, upper Bavaria and parts of Württemberg. The delivered sugar beets are inspected for quality and sugar content. Südzucker and the farmers have worked as a team to successfully improve the economics and environmental soundness of beet cultivation, and their efforts are widely recognized. The farmers cultivate and are paid for the supplied beets under contract to Südzucker. The agreements are largely defined by the EU sugar market regulations.
